Why do I need to have my chimney swept?
Chimneys need to allow the free passage of dangerous combustion gasses. Regular sweeping will remove soot, bird nests, cobwebs and any other blockages. It also removes creosote, which will help to prevent dangerous chimney fires. Chimney Sweeping will also increase the efficiency of some appliances.
Which wood should I burn?
In terms of burning, wood generally falls into two categories;
- Slow-burning wood
- Fast-burning wood
Fast-burning wood burns at a fast rate. This produces a higher temperature but also means that you burn more wood. As a result, there may be extra costs with fast-burning wood.
Slow-burning wood provides a lower temperature and burns slower.
We would recommend mixing both types of wood. The fast-burning wood will provide quick heat and the slow-burning wood will ensure the fire lasts for longer.
My chimney has a birds nest. Can it be removed?
Under the Wildlife and Country Act, it is an offence to destroy or remove a birds nest during the nesting season. This lasts from March to August. It is necessary to wait until the end of August before checking that the nest is empty and can be removed.
If the nest is empty at this time then, yes, we can remove the bird’s nest for you.
